Jam Chakro: Within the Trash

Mr. Kashif graduated from Al-Khair School and is now working as the principal of Al Khair School, Campus II, in Umer Goth, Jam Chakro.
A rate list hangs inside the trader’s place. The scavengers get far less than they could get in the city’s main markets.
Animal bones are collected by the scavengers.

Children and adults suffer from various diseases due to bad environmental conditions.

Living in a landfill is not free. A slum like this has a rent of Rs.300 monthly which goes to the Wadera.

Thousands of tonnes of garbage pile up to form hills. Toxic fumes emerge as garbage is being burned around the slum. Al Khair School is the only concrete infrastructure in this area.
Umer Brohi, the landlord of the slum, or locally known as “Wadera”, poses for a photograph. He claims to own this land, although it is officially a landfill site. He does not admit of any control over the people living here. He claims to have raised his voice several times in front of the government for the rights of the scavengers here.

I did this photography project in 2017as part of my journalism class during my undergrad. You can read the full photo essay here.
